Summary Note PLAYAWAY: Not much happens in the small town of Griever's Mill, where eleven-year-old Ben Cameron spends his time bird-watching and hanging out with his family. But everything goes wrong when a sinister darkness rolls in. Mr. Crandall is the first to change, human one minute and a glass statue the next. Soon it's happening across the world. Dark clouds fill the sky and, at random, people are turned into frozen versions of themselves. There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, and no one knows how to stop it. Ben is certain that the victims of the glass plague can't be gone forever and that a flock of missing sparrows holds the key to bringing them back. But will the birds return with the statues' souls before it's too late? With his mom on the verge of a breakdown, and his brother getting brainwashed by a dangerous voice on the radio, Ben vows to protect one important statue from being shattered, even if it means standing against his own family.
